Osteopathic care focuses on strengthening the musculoskeletal systems to treat existing conditions and to prevent illness. Commonly treated conditions include back and neck pain, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, sporting injuries, muscle and joint deterioration, restricted mobility and occupational ill-health.

The osteopathic medical philosophy is defined as the concept of health care supported by an expanding scientific knowledge that embraces the concept of the unity of the living organism’s structure (anatomy) and function (physiology).

These are the four major principles of osteopathy:

• The body is a unit. An integrated unit of mind, body, and spirit.
• The body possesses self-regulatory mechanisms, having the inherent capacity to defend, repair, and remodel itself.
• Structure and function are reciprocally inter-related
• Rational therapy is based on consideration of the first three principles

Osteopathic manipulative treatment is the therapeutic application of manually guided forces to improve physiologic function and support homeostasis that has been altered by somatic dysfunction.
